If you have been struggling to get pregnant without success due to infertility issues – your age or your partner’s low sperm count or a combination of many factors – then follow these 8 step tips to increase your chances to get pregnant quickly and naturally.
- Chart your menstrual cycle - Get to know your body and your menstrual cycle to predict when ovulation is actually occurring to give yourself a better chance to conceive. Begin by charting the days of your menstrual cycle. Document it for a couple of months, from the time your period begins to the day when it ends. After a few cycles you’ll be able to see a routine and identify the length of your menstrual cycle. Your cycle may be the typical 28 days but more likely than not it is either shorter or longer.
- Cervical Muscus: Within your menstrual cycle, take note of quantity and quality of your cervical mucus. The days that the cervical muscus is thick in texture, similar to egg white, are the days that you are most fertile and more likely to conceive.
- Basal Body Temperature: Chart your temperature to find out when you’re ovulating. Get a basal body thermometer and chart your temperature every single morning when you awake, before you do anything else. Your temperature rises a few tenths of a degree once you ovulate after which stays there until your period arrives. The change in temperature means that you have ovulated and ready to conceive.
- Cervix: The position and feel of your cervix is another indication that you are fertile and ready to conceive. At any time your cervix is either closed, slightly open or open and the feel is firm, medium or soft. Be aware that when the cervix is located high in the vagina, is open and the tip of the cervix is soft and fleshy, similar to the texture of the tip of your nose, is when you are most fertile.
- Luteinizing Hormone Surge: Luteinizing Hormone (LH) is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. A rise in LH levels, which typically takes place just before the egg is released, triggers ovulation. Ovulation predictor kits can be purchased at you local drug stores and are used daily around the time of ovulation to help you detect impending ovulation. This will help you with the timing of conception.
- Things to Avoid: Avoid anything that would interfere with your ability to get pregnant. If you are taking any prescription drugs, you should consult your doctor to identify if the drugs would decrease your chances of conception or would cause any defects a baby once you have conceived. Avoid smoking cigarette, drinking alcohol and drugs as these can interfere with your ability to get pregnant. Furthermore, avoid things that would cause an unfriendly sperm environment such as vaginal sprays, scented tampons, etc. Some of these can impede a sperms ability to swim up the cervix to fertilize the egg. Lastly, there are certain foods that you should avoid that would also decrease your chances of conception such caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to reduce both male and female fertility levels – as little as one cup of coffee a day can cut your chances of conception in half.
- Make Love on Fertile Days: To get pregnant, timing is everything. Make love on your most fertile days, which is several days leading up to and including the day of ovulation. Using the above tips, you’ll be able to better detect when you are most fertile. A woman is only fertile for a couple days in the cycle. The sperm needs to be in the right place “awaiting” for the arrival of the egg. Sperm can live inside a woman between 3-5 days, but the egg only survives for about 12-24 hours.
- Stay in bed: Stay in bed in a horizontal position for at least 5 minutes after you have finished making love. This will give the sperm a chance to make its way up the cervix.
Remember that conception doesn’t always happen the first or second time around. If you miss this window of opportunity, it’s game over for another month. Research shows that it takes a couple an average of 12 months to conceive.
